Long Island’s Haugland Group tapped for $200 million wind power job

Eversource Energy and Ørsted U.S. have awarded their largest offshore wind supply chain contract in New York to Haugland Energy Group.

The Long Island-based contractor, a Haugland Group affiliate, will create over 400 jobs for union workers to install the underground duct bank system for Sunrise Wind’s onshore transmission line in Brookhaven, project officials said.

The $200 million contract involves a 924-megawatt offshore wind project located approximately 30 miles east of Montauk. It is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025. Haugland previously worked with Eversource and Ørsted on their South Fork Wind project.

Once completed, Sunrise Wind is expected to generate enough energy to power about 70,000 homes each year and make significant progress toward New York state’s offshore wind goal of 9,000 megawatts by 2035, the companies said.

The project — a collaboration between Eversource and Ørsted — saw its underground transmission route approved in November 2022. Construction is expected to begin later this year.

“Haugland Group is proud to cement its leadership role in the renewable energy industry,” said Billy Haugland II, Chief Executive Officer of Haugland Group LLC. “Sunrise Wind represents amplified opportunities for all Long Islanders … as well as new opportunities for local businesses and the contracting communities alike.”

Sunrise Wind continues to garner strong support from local officials.

“It is clear that offshore wind is our nation’s clean energy future, and I am proud that Suffolk County is firmly at the forefront of this industry,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said. “Today’s announcement brings us one step closer to shovels in the ground and importantly supports our economy by securing hundreds of union jobs for Long Islanders.”

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “This project will not only provide clean energy to the Town of Brookhaven, but for Suffolk County at-large. With this joint venture, we solidify our commitment to sustainability, renewable energy, and our children’s futures.”
