Marijuana gummies sicken 12 middle school students in Moriches

|

Authorities and emergency responders were called to William Floyd Middle School on Monday morning after a student distributed edible marijuana gummies to classmates, sickening “approximately” a dozen students, school officials said.

Suffolk County Police and local EMTs responded to the Moriches school, providing care and assistance to the affected students, alongside the school nurse. Eleven of the students — who were all aged either 13 or 14 — were taken to local hospitals for medical evaluation, while one was released to a parent, officials said.

“We are grateful to our first responders for their quick response, thankful that the students will be treated, and hopeful that they will recover quickly,” the district said in a statement.

Suffolk County Police confirmed to Greater Long Island that cops responded to the school about 10:10 a.m. and that the students had taken THC edibles.

The news alarmed members of the district community.

“Where are 12 year old kids getting access to THC gummies? This is such a scary thing,” commented Charlene Dillon, in a Facebook discussion. “We all know that our children cannot be watched 24/7, but the child who was giving them out needs to face consequences and where they were able to get them from needs to be figured out.”

Nicole Walsh added, “I am really hoping this is just a scenario where a student found them from an older sibling and brought them in thinking they were nothing more than candy.

“This can be so scary. It could have been anything in those,” she added.

No criminal charges have been filed and discipline will be handled at the school level, police said. Further, no additional information is being released by police on where the gummies came from, cops said.
