The wait is finally over.
After a two-day weather delay caused by the nor’easter, one of the most anticipated Long Island high school football games in recent memory is happening tonight.
Massapequa and Garden City will meet for the first time in school history at 5 p.m. at Hofstra University’s James M. Shuart Stadium, bringing together two of the area’s most dominant programs — and two teams that haven’t lost in a combined 93 consecutive games.
The game was originally scheduled for Saturday night but was postponed as the nor’easter battered Long Island over the weekend.
Garden City has won 68 straight games, the longest active winning streak in the country, and captured five consecutive Long Island championships.
Massapequa has won 25 in a row and is the three-time defending Long Island Class I champion.
For Chiefs head coach Kevin Shippos, though, tonight isn’t about those numbers.
“This game isn’t about ending a streak or preserving one,” Shippos told Greater Long Island. “It’s about playing a quality opponent and a chance for our kids to see how they match up with one of the best teams on Long Island.”
Speaking of the best, Massapequa will once again rely heavily on star quarterback Luke Garguilo.
The senior was named Nassau County’s top quarterback following his junior season and has picked up where he left off, with three touchdowns through Massapequa’s first two games.
The Chiefs have rolled through both, outscoring their opponents 79-19.
Greater Long Island reached out to Garden City ahead of the matchup, but the Trojans declined to comment.
So now there’s really only one question left.
Can Massapequa do something no team has managed since Lindenhurst edged Garden City, 14-13, in the 2019 Long Island championship game?
We’re finally about to find out.
