Jillian Scully’s high school senior year has become one for the history books — literally.
The Miller Place High School track and field star shattered a decades-old New York state record in the girls discus throw Saturday at the prestigious Glenn D. Loucks Memorial Track & Field Games in White Plains, launching the discus 174 feet, two inches.
Asha Pensa-Johnson of Hampton Bays finished second with a throw of 141 feet, four inches.
Scully’s prodigious throw also made her the No. 1 ranked high school girls discus thrower in the country.
Scully, who graduates in June and will compete for LSU next school year, also had a dominant performance on Thursday, competing in the shot put event. In rainy conditions, she crushed the competition, earning first place with a throw of 46 feet, one inch.
She reflected on her Loucks discus throw in a celebratory Instagram post, writing: “See what I can (do) when it doesn’t rain.”
The record she surpassed had stood since 1992. It had been the oldest state track and field record on the books.
Scully has been rewriting the record books throughout her senior year. In February, she broke the county indoor shot put record with a throw of 48 feet, 4.25 inches during the winter track season.
That throw capped off a dominant winter in which she finished fifth at Nike nationals and claimed the New York state championship in shot put for a third straight season.
Making waves
Excited for their incoming recruit, the LSU track and field team proudly posted on Facebook about Scully’s record-breaking weekend.
