Kayak launch, community area built at the end of Beaver Dam Road

|

When driving east along Beaver Dam Road in Brookhaven Hamlet, it used to be that the roadway would end in a tangle of weeds and thicket.

Beyond the vegetation was the Carmans River, though you would barely know it.

The roadway’s end now has been transformed into an aesthetically pleasing, environmentally-friendly community area that includes benches, new landscaping, and a kayak launch.

Town Councilman Michael Loguercio, who helped lead the project, helped mark its completion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 24.

“I’m very excited about it,” he said. “This was a project that was a vision of mine and it’s wonderful to see people already enjoying it.”

There’s also now a clear view of the Carmans River, where before little was visible.

Loguercio said fishing stations will also be installed.

“The more public access there is to our natural resources, the better off we are,” said Adrienne Esposito, the executive director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment. “Being able to launch a kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddle board allows people to really enjoy where we live.”

Esposito was also on hand for the ribbon cutting.

A combination of state and town grants funded the approximate $150,000 project, according to the councilman. The money also helped pay for pavers and rain gardens.
