A new semi-pro football team is playing on Long Island, and the players are quickly making a name for themselves.
With a 6-2 record in 2017, the Long Island Eagles earned a trip to the Triboro Football League championship game in its inaugural year.
And team founder and coach, Anthony Biondo said this is just the start.
“We want to build off what we already established,” said Biondo.
The Eagles, which rostered a 50-player team this past season, had a mix of players and coaches from all ages and pedigrees.
Take coach Biondo for example.
He grew up playing football in West Babylon grade school, but didn’t discover semi-professional football until his 40s. Now, at 51, he’s trying to give other football hopefuls a shot with his team.
Whether its a player trying to make a name for himself for a college team or a professional team, the Long Island Eagles are now an option.
“This gives them another platform to extend their playing careers,” said Biondo, who lives in Bellport.
The team, which travels throughout New York and Connecticut, currently plays its home games on fields across Long Island. The season begins in the spring.
They’re also looking to better integrate themselves in their local communities.
On Oct. 22, the Eagles hosted its first annual Tackle Cancer Classic at Pape Field in West Babylon to raise awareness for cancer.
