NYS creates Sept. 11, 2001, memorial plates to honor victims’ families

|

A new law was passed recently to help commemorate the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on state roadways.

That new legislation, which was sponsored by state Senator Ken LaValle (R-Port Jeff Station), allows the NYS DMV to create 9/11 memorial license plates.

According to the bill — which  went into effect Aug. 27 — a portion of the funds will be donated to the World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship Program.

To create the plates, an annual service charge of $25 from the DMV will be charged to plate recipients, with $20 each year benefitting the Scholarship Program, a not-for-profit.

“On September 11, 2001, our nation and, in particular, our state, experienced an unforgettable tragedy.  Nearly 3,000 New Yorkers lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center,” said LaValle. “The new license plates will provide a measure of comfort for the families of those who tragically lost loved ones on that day.

“An additional measure of relief will be knowing children of the deceased will be able to access scholarship funds for college tuition.”

Assemblymen Fred Thiele (I-Sag Harbor) sponsored the law in the Assembly.
