While the Mets fight for playoff success, Bayport’s Gina Mormando leads another Citi Field sensation.
As head coach and choreographer of The Queens Crew, the Mets’ new dance squad in 2024, the Long Island mom has helped transform the ballpark experience, keeping fans dancing in their seats during pauses in the action on the baseball diamond.
Mets nation this season has been treated to an exciting summer, with the team recovering from a sluggish start to win 89 games and reach the playoffs for the second time in three years. The arrival of The Queens Crew serendipitously coincided with the emergence of “OMG,” the surprise hit No. 1 song by Mets second-baseman Jose Iglesias.
The song — which promotes peace and prosperity and debuted atop the Latin Digital Song Sales chart — quickly became the team’s anthem this summer, as New York recorded MLB’s best won-loss record after June 1 and marched to the playoffs. And the 19-member Queens Crew has been dancing to the rhythm of the catchy song at home games from the very beginning.
The Queens Crew, before and after games, between innings and during other breaks, energizes fans at Mets home games with dance routines on top of the dugouts and in common areas of the stadium, and by playfully mingling with mascots Mr. and Mrs. Met.
Mormando is a former New York Jets cheerleader and member of the New York Islanders’ dance squad. Before joining the Mets organization, she was the director and choreographer of the Long Island Riptide lacrosse team’s dance squad.
The Mets and Philadelphia Phillies are locked in a 1-1 tie in their best-of-five National League Divisional Series. Games 3 and 4 are Tuesday and Wednesday at Citi Field. Both games start at 5 p.m.
The Queens Crew has been part of a festive summer at Citi Field — one that the saw Grimace of all characters become the team’s lucky charm.
