He played for the Miracle Mets back in 1969, and now he needs a blessing of his own.
The 18-year Mets first basemen and a longtime diabetic, Ed Kranepool, is in need of a kidney transplant.
“It is just a matter of time before I have major problems,” Kranepool told GreaterPortJeff.
To raise awareness for organ donations in general — and to help his friend — Stony Brook banker John Tsunis held a rally at Gold Coast Bank in East Setauket on Tuesday.
“It breaks me up a little bit,” said Tsunis about the large turnout at his rally. “Ed is a good guy and he was dealt a bad hand.”
At the meet-up, Tsunis, among other residents, filled out forms to see if they were a good match for the 73-year-old.
According to reports, New York State has among the lowest organ donor numbers in the entire nation.
If a match is found, Kranepool will receive a transplant at Stony Brook University Hospital.
