New clothes. Acai bowls. Gasoline.
There are lots of ways for teenage girls to spend their money.
But Patchogue-Medford High School senior Taylor Hanscom has been running yard sales for eight straight years with one goal in mind: raising funds for St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
To the tune of $10,000 over that time.
Located in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude Children’s Hospital is a pediatric treatment and research facility focused on children’s catastrophic diseases.
And families never receive a bill from St. Jude, thanks to the efforts of people like Taylor. The hospital reportedly cost $2.4 million a day to run in 2015.
“I love to give back and put time into a foundation that stands for giving in times of struggle,” Taylor said in a statement released through the district. “To know that I’m able to make someone’s life in need have more comfort or help them with their medical needs has been a very uplifting experience.”
At Patchogue-Medford High School, Taylor is also treasurer of the Key Club, a member of various honor societies, and on the varsity tennis team, according to the school district.
She is also in the top one percent of the class based on academic rank.
“I love supporting this organization and all it stands for and my hope is to make a difference in a child’s life,” she said. “A simple idea and a desire to help has led to a great success supporting St. Jude’s.”
