Pat-Med superintendent addresses community over death of Patchogue elementary student

|

Patchogue-Medford schools Superintendent Donna Jones penned a heartfelt letter to the district community on Tuesday, concerning the suicide death of a Medford Elementary School student.

Jones notes in the letter that the boy, Anders Hart, “was an all around delightful student who excelled academically, athletically, and musically” and who “also struggled with depression.”

The superintendent said that counselors at the elementary school located on Medford Avenue in Patchogue are being made available on Wednesday and Thursday (from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. on both days) this week to support teachers, students and parents coping with the tragic loss. There are no classes this week, as the district is on its spring break.

When classes resume on Monday, counselors, psychologists and social workers will be available to assist students from all Patchogue-Medford schools, as Andres has siblings attending other schools in the district, Jones said.

Jones’ letter — posted below — has more details about how the district is addressing this difficult time.
