Pat-Med teacher picked for prestigious STEM fellowship program

|

Patchogue-Medford science teacher Jennifer Gatz is in a class of her own.

It was announced this week that Dr. Gatz is one of 10 teachers from New York chosen to participate in the STEM Teaching Fellowship program.

Gatz, who teaches AP biology and Capstone at the high school, will be entering a 16-month training program that features two weeks of biomedical engineering research.

The STEM Leadership Center works with Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Teachers College of Columbia University, and NASA to create the course with the goal of giving teachers an additional depth of knowledge in the classroom, all designed to inspire students.

“By training these teachers, we have an opportunity to enrich STEM teaching and learning for thousands of students in our region with the goal to ignite interest and inspire more careers in science and engineering,” said the executive director of the STEM Leadership Center, Lawrence Perretto.

Upon completion, Gatz will receive a nine-credit Leadership Certificate from Teacher’s College Columbia University, as well as participate in a two-week mentorship at Regeneron.
