Looking for a 3-on-3 pickup game in Patchogue?
Now you could head to Campbell Courts on South Ocean Avenue.
The courts there were renamed in memory of local basketball legend and coach Don Campbell, the brainchild of the village’s youth basketball clinic, which has been a treasure for Patchogue summer campers for decades.
The clinic has been attended by thousands of children since its inception in the early 1970s. It’s offered in the summer for kids 4 to 16.
Last month’s naming ceremony included the unveiling of a new sign by Trustee Joseph Keyes (pictured).
“One of my dad’s passions was basketball and he had the vision to develop a basketball program that would teach our youth the fundamentals of the game in hopes that they would also come to love the game and get to know others in the community,” Jeff Campbell, one of Don Campbell’s sons, said in his remarks at the ceremony.
He also runs and coaches at the village’s youth basketball program with his brother, Scottie, a local restaurateur. Alicia Furman coaches the younger kids.
“I would like to thank Mayor [Paul] Pontieri,” he added, addressing the mayor. “My dad knew and respected you as a fellow educator, administrator and, most importantly, someone who loves Patchogue.”
He also credited Furman for doing “an amazing job.”
