The smell of baked bread filled the air under the hot sun as guests shuffled under the tent to celebrate the first day of Oktoberfest in Center Moriches, hosted by Lidl, a German grocery store that will open a location in the community this winter.
Guests lined up at the stations serving their award-winning beers, authentic bratwurst, Bavarian pretzels and more. Children could drink juice or the traditional Oktoberfest cookie that can either be worn or eaten.
“We’re sort of playing on the German background of our company but really it’s just about the community here more than anything,” said Will Harwood, Lidl’s U.S. spokesman. “We look forward to becoming a local Long Island grocer.”
The company is planning to open a total or four locations this winter.
Lidl hosted the event in partnership with the John Theissen Children’s Foundation to raise awareness for sick and underprivileged children. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the charity.
On Saturday, Smitty’s Polka Band, played traditional German music.
Some even danced to celebrate the event. Among them was Melly Losada, who lived in Germany for 30 years and said she had looked forward to event.
“I used to dance a lot at the Oktoberfest in Munich,” Losada said.
“I love Lidl,” said Losada. “That’s why I came. If it’s Lidl, it must be good.”
Oktoberfest will continue today at 812 Montauk Hwy. in Center Moriches until 6 p.m.
