A pilot and his single passenger died Monday evening in a small plane crash on the runway at Long Island’s MacArthur Airport, police said.
Suffolk Police confirmed to Greater Long island that the wreck at the Ronkonkoma airport happened about 6:15 p.m. as a single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza A36 was taking off from Runway 6.
Cops at a news conference Monday night said an airport employee observed a small aircraft leave the runway in a southwest direction, and was attempting to return to the runway. The male pilot and his adult male passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police added that their bodies will be taken to the Suffolk County medical examiner’s office for positive identification. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating, police said.
Authorities did not immediately identify the victims, pending notification of next of kin.
