Pizza with a purpose today for Nassau P.O. Espinosa’s grieving family

|

If you were on the fence on whether or not to order pizza today, consider your decision made.

A whopping 307 pizzerias across Nassau and Suffolk counties have signed up for Wednesday’s “Pizza Against Drunk Driving” fundraiser. The event, organized by LI Pizza Strong, will benefit the family of Nassau P.O. Patricia Espinosa.

Espinosa, 42, was struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver in St. James earlier this month while on her way to work.  She leaves behind her husband, Francisco Malaga, also a police officer, and their 2-year-old daughter.

How it works

Order a pie today from any of the participating pizzerias, and they will donate $5 from each sale to the cause, with 100 percent of proceeds going directly to Espinosa’s family.

“So many places signed up this time because this is such a relatable cause, almost everyone knows someone in law enforcement, so it hits close to home for so many,” Alyssa Guidice, the co-founder of LI Pizza Strong, told Greater Long Island.

“They want to be a part of something amazing and help this family out.”

As GLI previously reported, LI Pizza Strong was founded in 2023 to support victims and families impacted by the Farmingdale High School band bus crash.

In that effort, on Oct. 25, 2023, 140 pizzerias from across the Island helped raise over $100,000 in a day.

The group has since organized several large-scale community fundraisers.

“With so many Long Island businesses taking part, and so many Long Islanders willing to help out, it shows that Long Island is the best,” Guidice said. “There’s nothing like the community coming together.”

In addition to the more than 300 stores across Nassau and Suffolk, the fundraiser is also stretching as far south as South Carolina, where there are two pizzerias taking part, as well as one from New Jersey.
