After a winning night for Mayor Paul Pontieri and his team of incumbents on the Patchogue Village Board, the mayor looked ahead to the next four years and what might be in store for the village.
He said bringing a hotel to Main Street is still very much on his mind — as it was when he was first elected in 2004 — and he thinks the village “is getting closer,” to seeing a hotel happen, saying Tritec Real Estate is still involved with a potential plan.
That plan, according to prior reports, is to build where Brookhaven Memorial Hospital currently has its dialysis center, immediately to the west of Tritec’s New Village at Patchogue complex on West Main Street.
Brookhaven Memorial officials have said they would move their operations from the Main Street building to the county’s John J. Foley Nursing Home in Yaphank, should the hospital reach a deal with Suffolk County.
“A lot is going to depend on what the hospital does,” Pontieri said at Tuesday night’s victory party at The Oar Seafood Grill.
“We’re going to have some issues come up [in the next four years],” he said, “and not the least of which is Briarcliffe College leaving; what are we going to do what that building? That’s of great concern.”
“The other piece is the quality-of-life issues, like finishing the parks grant and making sure what we do fits into what the needs of the community are, and making sure every single nickel of that [money] is spent the right way.”
“When you talk about quality of life, you talk about the neighborhoods, but also downtown,” the mayor continued. “We hear about a broken window here or a drunk guy there, and we just have to manage our downtown so it’s always a safe place for people to be.”
