Popeye’s proposed for Sunrise Highway location in Bohemia

|

A Popeye’s Louisiana Chicken may soon open in Bohemia.

On Feb. 9, the Town of Islip Planning Board reviewed an application for a fast food eatery at 4525 Sunrise Highway. The existing site plan calls for a 2,145-square-foot Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen with a 46-seat dining room and a drive-thru window.

Based on the plan, the drive-through will wrap from the parking lot to the rear of the building to accommodate at least a dozen cars.

The applicant, under the name Bohemia Chicken, LLC, requested a change of zone from a business 2 district to a business 3 district. It also requested a special permit from the town board to permit a fast food restaurant.

The site along Sunrise Highway is currently barren and neighbors a 7-Eleven. During the meeting, Sean Colgan, the town’s senior planner, said “a nearly identical application for a fast food restaurant was applied for in 2018, but was withdrawn after the public hearing.”

Members of the public who spoke during the meeting voiced concerns over excessive noise that may travel northward from the fast food joint to the residential area.

The planning board closed the hearing and asked the applicants to review and address concerns raised during the hearing. Among these concerns, the applicant will explore sound attenuation methods with the town.

A representative for the application said the restaurant would operate from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 p.m. six days a week, and that it would likely have reduced hours on Sundays.
