Port Jeff increasing parking meter fees on weekends throughout summer

|

Metered parking fees are set to rise for the first time in eight years in Port Jefferson Village.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, metered parking in village lots will increase from $.50 an hour to $1 an hour, but at limited times. The new price takes effect on weekends only, starting on Fridays at 4 p.m. and ending on Sundays at midnight.

“Any other municipality is at least at that rate or more,” said the village’s parking administrator, Kevin Wood.

For Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to midnight, and Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the prices will remain at $.50 an hour.

All street parking will remain free as always, however, most spots have time constraints.

The increase in price is part of a continuous effort in revitalizing municipal lots.

“You can see visible signs of our reinvesting,” Wood said.

Past meter generated funds have been used in the re-striping of lots, new signage, as well as the upgraded meters, according to the village.

“[The new meters] are reducing parking anxiety for businesses in the village,” said Wood.

In addition to the easier-to-use meters, Port Jeff will be rolling out Parking Ambassadors, which are village employees who will help patrons.

“They will give helpful information on how to use the meters, as well as directions and answer any questions,” explained Wood.

The Ambassadors will be roaming the lots during peak hours starting on Memorial Day.
