Car wreck on Port Jefferson Ferry sends driver to hospital

|
there was a one-car wreck on the Port Jefferson Ferry Wednesday night.

Thanksgiving Eve turned chaotic aboard the Port Jefferson ferry when a vehicle crashed into the rear ramp, prompting a complex but successful rescue from fire and EMS crews.

Firefighters were called to the Grand Republic vessel about 5:20 p.m. after a vehicle became wedged against the wall of the rear ramp on the starboard side, police and the Port Jefferson Fire Department reported.

Crews rescued the driver and used tactical rescue equipment to pull the auto back up the ramp to the top deck, where it was placed on go-jacks supplied by ferry staff. Rescue crews then lowered the vehicle down to the front ramp.

The driver was meanwhile taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The department described the response as “complex and unusual,” but said collaboration between firefighters and ferry personnel resulted in a safe outcome.

Suffolk County Police told Greater Long Island that Sixth Precinct officers also responded to the scene.
