It was a busy weekend for Sayville High School quarterback Patrick Coan.
First, the junior helped lead the undefeated Gold Flashes to a thrilling Suffolk County championship win Friday night over Half Hollow Hills West, 32-25. And then on Saturday, Coan made spent the afternoon on the Rutgers football sideline, taking in the Scarlet Knights’ stunning last-second loss to No. 24 Illinois (9-3).

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound younger cousin of Canadian Football League quarterback (and former Sayville star) Jack Coan has maintained regular communication with the Big Ten program. His trip to New Jersey with his parents on Saturday was an unofficial visit, which is a campus visit not funded by the university.
In Friday’s county championship at Stony Brook University, Coan completed 11 of 23 passed for 198 yards and one touchdown. Sayville (11-0) plays Garden City (11-0) for the Long Island Class III championship on Saturday at Stony Brook University.

Several Long Islanders play for Rutgers (6-6), including sophomore wide receiver Ian Strong of Coram. The St. Anthony’s High School graduate has 33 receptions for 508 yards, with four touchdowns, this season. Freshman receiver KJ Duff, a St. Anthony’s alum from Riverhead, has 21 catches for 354 yards and one touchdown.
More game-day invites
Coan this fall also received game-day invites from Stony Brook, the University at Buffalo and Monmouth University in New Jersey. Over the summer, he received his first scholarship offer from Stony Brook. He additionally has maintained regular contact with Syracuse.
Hometown ‘Salad Celeb’
In October, Coan had a little fun with being named a “Salad Celeb” at The Greenery in Sayville.
