He’s ranks third on the team in RBIs, third in runs, fourth in hits and second in walks.
Sayville High School product Brock Murtha is doing it all at the plate this spring for Navy baseball. The Midshipmen’s starting third baseman even pitches, notching a very tidy 2.08 era in four relief appearances.
Murtha, a five-year varsity player and a county champion while at Sayville, is playing his first season with Navy, after transferring from Notre Dame. Over the course of two seasons, he saw limited action for the Fighting Irish, using up just one season of eligibility.
Murtha is hitting .275 for Navy (20-22) this spring, with two home runs and 23 RBIs. He has drawn 19 walks and scored 23 runs. With six games remaining on its schedule, Navy is 12-10 in the Patriot League conference. They are likely to play in the conference playoffs, which begin May 13.
As a junior in high school in 2019, Murtha tossed a no-hitter in Sayville’s Long Island championship win over Clarke. It was Sayville’s first-ever Long Island championship. The West Sayville native also led Long Island in home runs that season with 10.
During his senior season on the football team at Sayville, Brock started on offense and defense, earning Newsday All-Long Island honors while helping lead the Golden Flashes to a Suffolk County Division 3 football title.
Murtha’s younger brother Macklin plays football at the University of Rhode Island.
