Shah’s Halal Food coming to Medford, town OKs new takeout spot

|

Shah’s Halal Food is set to open a new takeout restaurant in Medford following the Brookhaven Town Board’s approval of its site plan.

The restaurant will be located at 2650 Route 112 on a small lot previously home to a long-vacant real estate office.

The approved plans include a 1,200-square-foot, one-story building — a reduction from the originally proposed 1,800 square feet — to better fit the site and avoid zoning variances.

“This property has been abandoned for some time, and this project will improve and beautify the area,” said Amy DeVito of Woodhull Expediting, who represented Shah’s Halal Food during a public hearing on the project last Thursday.

The new takeout place will be located on the west side of Route 112, just north of Robinson Avenue. Brookhaven Planning Director Don Hohn described the addition as a positive development for the neighborhood.

“We’ve found the site plan to be acceptable with very few conditions,” he said during the public hearing. “This would be a good addition to the community.”

A growing brand

Shah’s Halal Food is a rapidly expanding chain, founded by Shafiq Mashriqi, who purchased the Medford property in 2020. Mashriqi also owns other Shah’s locations and oversees the brand’s franchising operations. The chain operates more than 75 locations across the United States, and dozens more in England and Sweden.

On Long Island alone, Shah’s Halal Food boasts 19 locations, including one on Middle Country Road in Selden, near the former Go Kart park. The closest Shah’s to the incoming Medford restaurant is a few miles north in Middle Island.

Other Shah’s restaurants in Suffolk County are located in Riverhead, Hauppauge, Holbrook, Stony Brook, Commack, Huntington Station, Huntington Village, Lindenhurst and Melville.

The brand opened its first brick-and-mortar establishment in 2016, in Hicksville.
