An on-duty Suffolk Police sergeant was seriously injured Friday when the unmarked police car he was driving collided with an SUV carrying a young mother and her 3-year-old son in Shirley, police said.
The sergeant was heading south on River Road about 8 a.m. and was trying to make a left onto Victory Avenue when the police car hit a 2026 Honda CR-V going west on Victory Avenue, according to police.
The sergeant, whose name was not released, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The Honda’s driver, Kenia Castillo Canales, 25, of Shirley, and her 3-year-old son were also taken to Stony Brook University Hospital. Police said both had minor injuries.
Both vehicles were impounded for a safety check.
