A Farmingville man remains hospitalized in critical condition after a freak softball accident in October, and his family is now considering their legal options.
Greater Long Island previously reported on the incident, which left 29-year-old Nicholas Russo in a coma and sparked an outpouring of support from across Long Island and beyond.
The young husband was running to first base when his foot became trapped between two unstable, unsecured bases, according to a spokesperson for his attorneys at Napoli Shkolnik. Russo fell, hitting his head and suffering an epidural hematoma that required an emergency craniotomy.
The Sachem East High School alumnus cannot walk or speak and is facing another brain surgery.
Russo was injured during an organized league softball game at a Town of Smithtown-operated complex, where the wrong equipment was reportedly used and the turf field poorly maintained, said a spokesperson for attorneys with the firm Napoli Shkolnik, representing Russo and his family.
Support for Russo and his family continues to grow, with more than $107,000 raised on a GoFundMe page to help cover his ever-mounting medical expenses.
Greater Long Island contacted representatives from the Town of Smithtown; a response is pending.
