Snapchat threat targets ‘Pulaski Elementary School,’ causes confusion in Riverhead

|

Long Island’s scary start to the school year continued Wednesday with a school threat made on social media that initially was mistakenly believed to be against a Riverhead school and a number of other school buildings, police said.

A parent reported to Riverhead Police that their child had discovered a Snapchat post involving an unspecific possible threat toward “Pulaski Elementary School,” police said. Investigators responded to the family’s home about 6:40 a.m. and learned that the post was circulating among other students.

School officials were contacted and extra police patrols were conducted at Riverhead’s Pulaski Street Intermediate School; the school district does not have a school that’s formally named “Pulaski Elementary School.”

“Upon further investigation, it was determined that the ‘Pulaski Elementary School’ mentioned is a school from out of state and the local authorities in that jurisdiction are already aware of the post and is currently being investigated by them,” Riverhead Police said in a statement. “The Riverhead Police Department wants to remind everyone if they come across any social media involving a possible threat of harm or violence, to contact your local police department immediately.”

Series of school threats

The scare comes in wake of a series of other threats made against Long Island schools just one week into the school year.

On Tuesday, an individual made a bomb threat against Kellenberg High School in Uniondale. The threat prompted a response from Homeland Security before police issued an all-clear message, according to a report.

On Monday, Suffolk Police provided security at Stimson Middle School in Huntington after someone made threats against two students and the school.

And last week, Suffolk cops arrested a 15-year-old Lindenhurst boy on Wednesday after in an online chat with classmates he allegedly threatened to shoot people at his school, police said. A 911 caller reported that the teen, a student at Brennan High School in West Babylon, made the threat late Wednesday afternoon, outside of school hours, police said.

Authorities have not identified the boy due to his age. He was charged with making a threat of mass harm, a misdemeanor.
