Southside Hospital on Tuesday showcased its newly completed $56 million, five-story parking garage to the community.
Over 100 people got their first glances of the 1,000-car garage, which will be used for employees to help alleviate the parking crunch in the area.
“To think about a five-story parking garage in Bay Shore was very scary to many people,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter at the press conference. “We took the leap of faith… as far as parking garages go, this is beautiful.”
The facility, located on corner of Union Boulevard and Aletta Place, is part of Northwell Health multi-year expansion of the Bay Shore hospital.
“This garage is a symbol for what is happening here at Southside Hospital,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health.
The project was delivered on time, despite being built through the COVID-19 pandemic, workers on the project said.
Among the major contributors was B&G Electric, which did all the electrical work, pushing through increased lead times of light fixtures and switch gears, yet not missing a beat, a representative for the company said.
B&G also installed new traffic signals at Aletta Place and Union Boulevard, due to the new traffic flow. The site was also surrounded with new decorative light poles along Union and Montgomery avenues.
Over the last few years, Northwell has invested around $500 million into the South Shore hospital, including adding a new lobby, among other advancements to its clinical practices.
And during Dowling’s unveiling of the parking garage, he revealed Northwell’s next plans Southside.
First, a name change to South Shore University Hospital.
And then, over the next 3-6 years, another round of $500 million in investments in creating a 90-room pavilion pavilion and for more bolstering of the hospital’s capabilities.
“We saw the enormous potential in this community as convert this from community hospital to a premier tertiary campus,” Dowling said.
A Southside spokesperson said the new name reflects the hospital’s commitment to training medical residents and students in the following areas:
- Family medicine
This is the first time Southside will have its name changed since its incorporation in 1913.
