About Ruth Gipps: Gipps’ career was affected strongly by discrimination against women in the male-dominated ranks of music. Because of this opposition, she developed a fierce determination to prove herself through her work. Considered by many to be a masterpiece, Gipps’ Horn Concerto, Opus 58 was written for her son and first performed in 1969. It is a warm-hearted, accessible work that has many earmarks of the Romantic style typical of Gipps’ work.
The second half of the program will feature a performance of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s popular symphonic suite, Scheherazade (also known as The Arabian Nights) which tells the story of one of the most fascinating and beloved female characters in the literary canon.
