Mark March 13 on your calendars.
That’s when William Floyd football begins to defend its 2019 Division I high school county championship and finally opens the 2020-21 school year season — on the road against Sachem East in Farmingville.
The Colonials’ mini, four-game regular season concludes with a home game April 10 against Brentwood. The team’s only other home contest is March 20 versus Longwood.
High school football was postponed in the fall in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. But it’s back in play this school year, after state and Suffolk County officials announced this month that sports classified by the state as “high risk” can begin practice and competition on Feb. 1.
Traditional winter sports, such as wrestling and girls and boys basketball, are set to begin their seasons next month, playing until March. Traditional spring sports, including lacrosse, baseball and softball, will play from April 18 until the third week of June.
Sandwiched in-between is a “fall” season that includes football, soccer and volleyball. It will run March 1 until the fourth week of April.
