Sure, you might miss the popcorn everywhere, and the free meals for kids. And the projector screens.
But not everything was built to last.
The “original” Ground Round (see below) went bankrupt in 2004, closing all corporately owned locations.
But the privately owned and franchised Ground Round location in Brookhaven Hamlet kept at it, eventually becoming Long Island’s last and only Ground Round before abruptly closing in 2021 at 2647 Montauk Highway.
The plan was to close temporarily, Greater Long Island reported at the time.
But it never reopened. And now the huge space and property has been up for sale, or for lease. A sign outside the restaurant instructs interested parties to call 631-872-2064.
The last publicly listed asking price online was $1.95 million and the taxes were listed at just over $21,000 annually for the building and its 2.4 acres.
The building itself measures 4,800 square feet with a 1,400-square-foot outdoor dining patio.
Greater Long Island could not get in touch with the listing agent.
The Ground Round returns!

Miss the Ground Round?
Here’s some great news.
A couple in New England, Joseph Shea and his wife Nachi Shea, are resurrecting the Ground Round after reportedly acquiring the intellectual property rights to the brand.
They are currently working to open a first location of the “new” Ground Round in Shrewsbury, Mass.
“My connection is going to the Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, location as a child and young teen,” Joseph Shea told Restaurant Business Online in November. “Like so many, I have the fondest memories of a place we loved to go for food and fun and that is something we are working diligently to bring back.”
According to this Jan. 23 report from CT Insider, it should be opening soon enough, possibly in March.
You could follow the location’s progress on the couple’s Facebook page. Or visit the website.
If you go
The Ground Round is scheduled to open at 271 Grafton St., in Shrewsbury, Mass., according to CT Insider. If you’re looking to take the trip, we suggest the Cross Sound Ferry. Shrewsbury is about 1 hour and 40 minutes from New London, Conn. Or, if you’re embarking from Port Jefferson to Bridgeport, Conn., the car ride will take just under two hours.
