Staples store closing in Levittown as Sprouts prepares to move in

|

After more than 15 years in Levittown, Staples will close its doors next month, clearing the way for Sprouts Farmers Market to move into the longtime office supply store’s space.

Signs recently posted outside the Hempstead Turnpike store announce the location will close Aug. 28. Earlier this year, Sprouts confirmed to Greater Long Island that it plans to open its first Nassau County location in the space.

Employees inside the store declined to discuss the closure, though one appeared visibly upset.

Greater Long Island has learned employees were notified of the decision less than two weeks ago. Some are expected to transfer to other Staples locations.

The Levittown Staples opened in 2009 in the same shopping plaza as the Tri-County Flea Market, serving generations of shoppers with office supplies, printing services and back-to-school essentials.

The news disappointed longtime customers who said the store had become part of their regular routine.

“It stinks,” said one shopper, who only gave her name as Laura, of Wantagh. “That was my go-to. It was so convenient to a lot of other stores I go to in the area.”

When the store closes, the nearest Staples locations will be in Massapequa, Westbury and Hicksville.

Ironically, the closure comes just about a year after the Levittown store received a significant refresh, including the addition of a Party City section that expanded its party supplies and seasonal merchandise.

Staples will become the second major retailer to exit the shopping center this year. As Greater Long Island previously reported, neighboring Wren Kitchens closed last month as part of a companywide shutdown that also affected its Commack, Selden and Massapequa locations.

Calls seeking additional comment from the property’s listing agent and Sprouts Farmers Market were not immediately returned.
