Stony Brook alum turns his school spirit into a growing sports blog

|

It’s not often you’ll see Stony Brook athletes on the back cover of the Daily News.

Even the local media seems to overlook the Seawolves’ accomplishments.

And it’s that lack of attention that prompted Adam Peck, a 2011 SBU School of Journalism graduate, to start his own Stony Brook coverage through a sports blog called Brookland. The site covers news and happenings from all 18 Division I sports at Stony Brook — with a larger focus on the football and basketball teams.

“SeawolvesNation Lives Here,” reads the blog’s bio on Twitter, which has over 1,500 followers. “Officially unofficial and always independent coverage.”

The idea arose back in 2012, when Stony Brook’s baseball team made it to the College World Series for the first time ever.

“As they were making this run, a couple of friends and I started blogging about it,” said Peck. “And we had a lot of fun doing it.”

That was the start of the coverage.

“And we have been going ever since,” said Peck.

One ever-present issue for the Westchester native is that he’s now living in Washington D.C., where he’s an editor for online news organization called ThinkProgress. Still, he manages it back to Long Island to watch and cover three of six home games per year.

And if he isn’t watching in person, he’s watching the streams online.

“I haven’t missed a game in many years,” says Peck.

The 31-year-old also says there are benefits to covering Stony Brook athletics from D.C.

“I am actually able to catch a lot of the away games since most of the teams Stony Brook play are from my region,” said Peck, referring to the Colonial Athletic Association. “Like Towson is 45 minutes away from me, and they play at James Madison University which is an hour away.”

Peck’s goal for Brookland is to continue creating content for a dedicated fan base.

“There are a quite a few fans out there yearning for more coverage,” said Peck. “And I think you see that with our growth.”
