Stony Brook University, one the nation’s top public colleges according to a recent ranking, is adding a new program for its undergraduates.
As of now, SBU offers a Bachelor of Science in biology, but will soon be adding a Bachelor of Arts for the study as well.
The two degrees will help the school cater to a wider range of students.
According to SBU officials, the BS in biology is intended for students who want to take advanced classes in biological studies, while the BA requires fewer advanced courses in biology, leaving room for students to complete a minor in the College of Arts and Sciences.
The minor must have no more than a three-credit overlap with the life science requirements for the BA in biology, reads a statement from Stony Brook.
In all, the BA in biology allows students to gain fundamental knowledge of life science, while also leaving room to pursue other areas of studies.
“The BA in biology is an opportunity for students to explore and gain skills,” said Sacha Kopp, the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Stony Brook.
“Marrying a major in biology with complementary training in writing, a language, history, literature, or other options will both offer a well-rounded education and offer skills in the humanities, arts, and social sciences that employers and graduate programs tell us are the keys to success,” she said.
Stony Brook hasn’t yet announced when the new degree will be offered.
