Storm bringing wind gusts up to 55 MPH to Long Island, NWS says

|

Get ready for a wet and windy commute home from work tomorrow night.

A storm bringing rain and wind gusts of up to 55 mph is expected to blow across most of Long Island on Monday, the National Weather Service warns in a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued today. Some weather reports indicate that wind gusts may reach 72 mph in parts of Suffolk County.

The service said that “deep low pressure tracking west of the region will produce strong southerly winds Monday and Monday night. Depending on the ultimate track and intensity of the system, gusts of 45 to 55 mph will be possible.”

“Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects,” the service’s report continued. “Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.”

The wind advisory is in effect between 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Monday. The storm may produce heavy rainfall. Temperatures will be mild, with an expected high of 62.

“We’re keeping a close eye on the weather for tomorrow,” the service posted on its New York area Facebook page. “Strong winds and plenty of rain are on the way for the NY/NJ/CT Tri-state area.”
