Saturday, Jan. 7 (7:15 p.m.):
From the Town of Islip: Supervisor Angie Carpenter has announced that a State of Emergency has been declared in Islip, and therefore residents are required to move their cars off of the road. Town crews have been plowing throughout the day to keep roads and intersections clear and safe for motorists. These crews will continue to operate after snowfall has ceased as part of our snow removal operations.
Saturday, Jan. 7 (noon):
From the Town of Islip: Supervisor Angie Carpenter is asking all residents, that in preparation of a possible snow emergency, to please begin to make arrangements to get their cars off the street. Town crews are out working, and the biggest help residents can provide is to move their cars off the road.
Saturday, Jan. 7 (10 a.m.):
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for all of Suffolk and up to 11 inches is possible.
Snow should be developing late morning and falling heavy at times throughout the afternoon, according to the NWS.
It will then taper off around midnight, the storm warning reads.
The daytime accumulation is expected to total 4 to 8 inches in the Bay Shore area, with an additional 1 to 3 inches coming after nightfall.
Temperatures will remain in the low 20s with wind gusts of up to 30 mph.
A winter storm warning is issued for heavy snow is issued only when severe weather conditions are expected or occurring. People are warned to only travel in the event of an emergency.
And if so, to keep an extra flashlight, food and water in the vehicle.
