Suffolk County Historical Society librarian Wendy Polhemus-Annibell runs an historic photo of the week feature you could sign up for by visiting the historical society’s website and giving them your email address.

This week’s image was of Halloween postcards that date back to the early 1900s.

And, as you can see, even with the introduction of M&Ms and comic book characters, the basics have remained the same: witches, black cats and jack-o-lanterns.

Polhemus-Annibell also typically provides some additional historical context and suggested reading. This week she shared this video about the holiday’s history and origins.
