The Suffolk Marathon is on but Freedom Fest is cancelled for Sunday

|

Stormy weather predicted for Sunday has forced the cancellation of the Freedom Festival and Taste of Island in downtown Patchogue.

But the Catholic Health Services Suffolk County Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K will run on.

The festival was meant to coincide with the race, which begins and ends in Patchogue.

“After a final review of the weather … it is near certain that conditions tomorrow will be miserable and potentially dangerous to hold our Freedom Fest Taste of Long Island,” announced David Kennedy of the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, which helps organize the event.

According to the National Weather Service, which has issued high winds and flood watches for the area Sunday through Monday, winds are expected to reach up to 20 mph Sunday, with a 90 percent chance of precipitation.

“Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible,” the NWS forecasts.

“It basically comes down to the heavy winds predicted and the possibility these winds can cause tents and canopies to become both unstable and hazardous,” Kennedy wrote in a Saturday announcement.

“With both the winds and heavy rain predicted, it is impossible to provide the staging and musical entertainment that was a central component of this event.”
