The Chowder Bar in Bay Shore wins island-wide ‘Food Fight’ through News 12

|

Thanks to about 13,000 voters, The Chowder Bar in Bay Shore was selected as this week’s winner of the News 12 Long Island’s Food Fight segment.

The competition began in February, when News 12 called on Long Islanders to submit their favorite restaurants. News 12 then narrowed the submissions down to 12 and asked viewers to vote in the Food Fight. Each week’s top vote-getter was featured that Monday.

“It’s fun to see where Long Islanders take us!” DiStefano told Greater Bay Shore.

The Chowder Bar became the third winner of the food feature, and was featured on TV this past Monday, March 20.

That was when News 12’s Elisa DiStefano headed to 123 Maple Avenue to meet Chowder Bar owners Lynda Nenninger and Patricia Robinson — and learn what makes them a fan favorite.

Upon arrival, DiStefano uncovered why the bayside restaurant has thrived in Bay Shore since 1946.

The restaurant has become known for its home-made Manhattan and New England chowders, as well as their Long Island chowder that mixes the two.

“We make the chowder stock from the chowder clams from the Great South Bay,” said Robinson.

In addition to their chowders, The Chowder Bar also has a large selection of seafood, from mussels to catfish.

Ninninger and Robinson’s motto is “Once you’ve nibbled, we’ll have you hooked,” and that holds true for Gordon Sammis, a Bay Shore resident who eats at Chowder Bar several times a month.

“Aside from the great food, the staff is very friendly; it’s almost like a club here,” said Sammis.
