Town dedicates E. Patchogue roadway to 9/11 responder Mark Gajewski

|

Longtime welder Mark Gajewski of East Patchogue was a responder to the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the World Trade Center and spent nine months working to clear the rubble.

And he paid for his sacrifices with his life, having succumbed to 9/11-related lung cancer on Dec. 11, 2017.

Gajewski, also known as “Ski,” was heralded as a man who spent a lifetime helping others in need, according town officials.

In 2005, he drove his truck to New Orleans to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

His memory is now being honored where he lived. The town on Saturday dedicated a portion of Martha Avenue in East Patchogue as “Mark W. Gajewski Way.” See photo above.

“It’s important that we honor those who exemplify the true spirit of community,” Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine said at the dedication “Mark Gajewski was an ordinary man who performed extraordinary acts and sacrificed his own life to help others.

“His family should take pride in knowing how much we all appreciate his courage to do the right thing.”

“I was proud to stand among Mark’s family and friends to celebrate his life,” added Councilman Michael Loguercio. “We will never forget his courage and determination to make a difference in the lives of so many people. I am thankful for the opportunity to honor his memory and share this day with so many great people.”
