Town of Babylon officials rolled out its Hometown Heroes Banner Program on Veterans Day, honoring residents who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. armed forces.
The project kicked off with the mothers of two active duty service members, Carolyn Mormino and Jeanine Walther, who approached Supervisor Rich Schaffer with the idea.
The program is in partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst who will hang banners throughout the town, showcasing the names and photos of servicemen and women of the community.
The initiative is an effort to both honor veterans while at the same time, beautifying the downtown areas.
Applications for the program will be available in January, with the banners hanging between Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day of next year.
Each banner costs $200 and a portion of the proceeds goes to a veteran-related charitable organization.
In addition to the banner hanging outside, participants will also receive a 4×6 inch print of the banner, a digital version and the chance to share loved ones’ service story to a page on the Town of Babylon and Lindenhurst Kiwanis websites.
“Here in the Town of Babylon, we always go the extra mile to honor our servicemen and women who have sacrificed so much to protect our freedoms,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “This is a unique way to honor our veterans and add an extra element to our downtowns. Thank you to the Lindenhurst Kiwanis, our Beautification Program, and all others involved for their hard work on this project,” he added.
