The Town of Brookhaven and the Village of Patchogue are pooling their lobbying efforts to redirect $26.4 million earmarked for a voter-rejected Great River sewer district to expand projects in Patchogue and Mastic.
Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine and Patchogue Village Mayor Paul Pontieri announced Tuesday that they issued a joint letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, seeking to have the funds be used to partially fund Phase 3 of the recently passed Mastic sewer project and to expand sewers in the village.
Officials are seeking to expand the Mastic sewer lines along the Forge River to the Mastic Beach business district with redirected funds.
Patchogue and Mastic Beach are both along the Great South Bay.
“We are combining our efforts in hope of keeping this funding local to show the governor that a great deal of good can come in keeping the money in Brookhaven,” Councilman Dan Panico said. “The people of Mastic Beach and Patchogue Village both want a cleaner bay.”

“I’ve already requested to explore the connection of the Mastic Beach Business District into phases 1 and 2 and have already requested grant funding for phases 3 and 4,” Suffolk Legis. Rudy Sunderman said in a statement. “We are looking forward to the start of this project in 2020 and more to come in the future.”
