Traffic Alerts: Don’t get jammed up during LIE nighttime lane closures

|

From the New York State Department of Transportation:

Motorists should expect lane closures the week of Monday, August 6, on Interstate 495/Long Island Expressway in the Towns of Huntington, Smithtown, Islip, and Brookhaven in Suffolk County and the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County.

The westbound left and HOV lanes will have closures between from Exit 65 (Suffolk County Route 16/Horse Block Road) and Exit 40 (State Route 25/Jericho Turnpike) during the off-peak overnight hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. for pavement marking operations. Variable message signs have been placed in the area to alert motorists and will carry additional details as well as updates.

This is part of a $6.9 million project to restripe lane markings on 14 state roads in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Lane markings are generally repainted every few years. Work on the Long Island Expressway is expected to be completed this fall.

As with most road projects, work may be cancelled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather.

Motorists are reminded to drive carefully through the work zone, obey any speed restrictions that may be in place, and the instructions of the flag persons for their safety and the safety of the highway work crew.

Recently, the New York State Department of Transportation and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee unveiled a new public service announcement and social media campaign focused on the importance of respecting flagging personnel. This year’s work zone safety campaign, “Flaggers have families too,” is designed to remind motorists that flagging personnel are not attempting to disrupt traffic – simply doing their jobs and want to get home safely at the end of each work day.
