Two rescued after small plane crashes in Long Island Sound on Sunday

A small aircraft went down in the Long Island Sound off the coast of Branford, Connecticut, Sunday morning, prompting a multi-agency emergency response and the rescue of two people, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 10:30 a.m., when a Piper Cherokee with two people on board crashed into the water southeast of the Thimble Islands, according to a statement from Tweed New Haven Airport.

The U.S. Coast Guard reported that crews from Station New Haven responded and successfully rescued the two individuals from the water. They were taken to Stony Creek Pier, where emergency medical services were waiting.

The Coast Guard said the flyers were both in stable condition at the time of the transfer.

Branford, Connecticut, is directly north of Wading River.

Tweed New Haven Airport said its control tower alerted local authorities and that Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) personnel had been placed on standby following the notification of the crash.

As of Sunday afternoon, further details, including the cause of the crash and the aircraft’s point of origin, were not yet available.
