The Long Island community is rallying around a Wading River family after a devastating overnight house fire destroyed their home just days before Christmas.
A GoFundMe campaign has raised over $10,000 through to support Cindy McCory, her 13-year-old son Jayson, and her longtime partner Donald “De,” whose home was gutted in the early Saturday morning blaze.
McCory, 31, is a special needs paraprofessional at a Riverhead charter school and Donald works two jobs to help support their small family, according to the GoFundMe page, titled “Help Cindy McCory’s Family Rebuild After House Fire.”
The fire destroyed nearly all of the family’s belongings and claimed the life of their beloved pet rabbit, Daisey, despite McCory’s desperate attempt to save her. The family car was also wrecked in the fire. The family did not have renter’s insurance, making the losses even more devastating.
Helping the family get back on their feet
Funds raised through the GoFundMe will go toward securing a new place to live and a vehicle so the family can begin to get back on their feet.
Firefighters with the Wading River Fire Department, together with fire crews from Riverhead, Ridge, Rocky Point and Manorville, battled gusty winds and icy conditions as they worked to knock down the flames, perform searches and prevent the fire from spreading, the Wading River Fire Department reported.
The fire was brought under control at 1:45 a.m., about 38 minutes after dispatch, the fire department said. No injuries were reported, and the scene was later turned over to the Riverhead Town Fire Marshal’s Office for investigation.
