Ward Melville boys lax coach awarded ‘Coach of the Year’ by national group

|

The wins keep pouring in for Ward Melville High School’s boys lacrosse team — and so do the awards.

After going 21-1 and winning the Class A New York State Championship last season, head coach Jay Negus was named Coach of the Year by the National Interscholastic Lacrosse Coaches Association (NILCA).

The statewide association gave Negus, who’s also an alumnus of Ward Melville,  the honor after he won the title in back-to-back years.

“NILCA couldn’t be more excited to name Coach Negus as NILCA’s ‘Prep School Showcase’ Coach of the Year,” said Ren Pettinelli, president of the National Interscholastic Lacrosse Coaches Association. “What coach Negus has been able to accomplish in his five seasons at Ward Melville is truly amazing in this day and age.”

Since his takeover in 2014, Negus holds an 88-16 record as the team’s head coach.

“Jay Negus is an outstanding coach, he cares about his athletes and their overall success more then he cares about winning lacrosse games,” said Three Village School District’s executive director of health, physical education, recreation, health services, driver’s education and athletics.

“Our lacrosse players respect him for that and therefore they follow him and play hard for him and the result is he teaches them how to succeed in life and we win lacrosse games as well.”
