Whether a local family has fled a house fire, or a domestic violence situation, they can turn to Angels of Island for help.
But as the Angels emphasize, “It’s a hand up, not a hand out.” Indeed, most recipients do get back on their feet, then later volunteer or donate for others.
But anyone on Long Island can help, quite simply.
Just shop at the Angels of Long Island thrift store in Patchogue, which now occupies five storefronts behind Mi Tierrita on East Main Street.
“We are not your average thrift store. Most people when they come in here are blown away,” says Debbie Loesch, who co-founded the Angels of Long Island with her daughter, Brittany, in Bellport in 2015. “I would compare [the shop] to many of these home goods stores.’
Between stocking the shelves with designer, brand-name products — many with the tags still on — the Angels also run massive back-to-school and Christmas giveaways, among other drives and community events.
Between those efforts, Long Islanders in need are invited to the store to shop — with a discreet method of ringing them up at no charge.
It’s up to Brittany and other to sift through the piles of applications.
“So many people are out of work … and they need some help,” she said.
The money spent in Patchogue goes to helping another Long Island family in crisis, Debbie said, adding:
“We really want to encourage the community to check us out.”
