20 photos: 17th annual March of the Goblins

Children jumped for joy at the sight of an inflatable Pikachu, as trick-or-treaters dressed up as everything from Bat Girl, Superman and Black Panther gathered goodies from businesses along Main Street in Center Moriches for the 17th annual “March of the Goblins” on Friday.

The event, which started in 2002, is hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of the Moriches. It was scheduled to be held on Halloween but was moved due to rain.

“This was our first rain date and it didn’t change anything,” said Gerry Sapanaro, the chamber’s treasurer. “The kids can enjoy a safe place to trick-or-treat and now they get an additional Halloween.”

Sapanaro was president of the chamber when the event was first introduced.

The event featured music, and more than 30 businesses handing out candy. The fire department closed Main Street to ensure the safety of the guests. An estimated 1,000 people attended this year, according to Chamber members.

“I like getting a lot of candy,” said Vincent Burkard, 8, of Moriches, who was dressed as an astronaut. This was his fourth year attending “March of the Goblins.” “Halloween is my favorite and I like changing my costume every year.”
