The elf costumes are ready to go, and so are the Kilwins staffers who are getting set to wear them — for 28 hours straight, collectively — in the run-up to Christmas Eve.
Kilwins owner John Murray is at it again, and will be keeping his two chocolate shops open overnight for a holiday. Two of his previous four overnight events have been featured by News 12 Long Island. Both of those happened leading into Valentine’s Day.
This will be Kilwins’ first overnight for Christmas.
“It’s the same idea,” Murray said. “We’ll be here and open for the Last Minute Larrys, as well as those working odd jobs and overnight or nighttime shifts.”
“Every time we’ve gone the extra mile here people have really appreciated it,” he said.
Kilwins opened at 74 East Main Street in Patchogue last December.
Murray’s first store, located in Babylon Village, will also be staying open for 28 hours straight, starting at 8 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 23. The stores won’t be closing until noon on Dec. 24, Christmas Eve.
“The overnights also give us the ability to really concentrate and deal one-on-one with each guest,” he said. “When it’s packed during the day, of course we take care of everyone, but we’ve got to move from one person to the next.”
Aside from the chocolate and fudge standards, Kilwins also stocks its shelves each December with peppermint bark, peppermint fudge and peppermint ice cream.
What’s more, the crew members will all be dressed as elves as they work through the night, loafing fudge and dipping apples, pretzels, Twinkies and more in chocolate for Christmas.
“I have eight costumes back there,” Murray said last week in Patchogue, himself modeling one of the elf costumes. “And there’s another eight in the other store. We’re ready to go.”
