The Patchogue United Methodist Church is facing an emergency situation and has launched an online fundraising campaign to keep the heat on at its historic building.
The congregation, which has been celebrating 225 years, learned its recently installed $50,000 boiler was destroyed because of a drainage problem, and the warranty won’t cover it.
They need a minimum of $30,000 to have the broken boiler replaced.
“Our building is 126 years old and is an outreach church serving over 200 homeless or needy people each week with food and clothing,” Pastor Charles Ferrara, known affectionately as “Pastor Chuck,’ wrote on the gofundme.com campaign. “We also provide dinners for our needy each month. On Christmas we will offer a full dinner for our guests who have no one to be with, as well as provide a toy for every child. That’s who we are, a faith community who cares.”
Now they’re hoping for a lot of care back as they head into Christmas and the winter.

“This is the boiler that heats our main sanctuary and other areas of our church,” Pastor Chuck wrote to the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce in an email that was then shared with all of its members. “Today the manufacturer’s rep and installer both informed us that the boiler is fried and irreparable–which means we have to completely replace it.
“This was caused by a drainage blockage which neither party will take responsibility for.”
