A 15-year-old’s drawing of a swastika inside a Syosset High School boy’s bathroom led police to a second disturbing discovery at his home: explosive materials assembled from chemicals purchased by his dad, cops said.
Nassau Police arrested the teen and his father, Francisco Sanles, 48, of Syosset on Wednesday on a bevy of criminal charges.
When investigators responding to the boy’s home found the explosive materials, police immediately evacuated the house and began clearing neighboring homes, authorities said.
The Nassau County Fire Marshal, Arson Bomb Squad, Police Emergency Service Unit (ESU), and Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Response Team all responded to the scene. HAZMAT personnel removed the hazardous materials from the home, police said.
Police said Sanles on numerous occasions purchased the chemicals that were used to assemble the explosives in the house.
Sanles was arrested Wednesday about 1:35 p.m. He is charged with two counts of first-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of fourth-degree criminal facilitation, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and reckless endangerment.
He was arraigned Thursday at Nassau First District Court.
Sanles’ son is charged with two counts of first-degree criminal possession of a weapon, fourth-degree criminal mischief, first-degree aggravated harassment, and making graffiti. Because he is a juvenile, he has not been publicly identified.
He was arraigned at Nassau County Family Court.
